My encounter with this film
Today's movie series continues with the third installment, featuring the French film "Amanda and Me."
This is a movie I happened to watch when the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2021 and I couldn't go out much. The title is "Amanda and Me," and my wife's name is also Amanda. In a way, I replaced "me" with myself, and I watched this movie without knowing anything about the story beforehand. This movie has now become one of my top 10 favorite movies. I think encounters with movies and books are always sudden.
A human drama that meticulously depicts a single event through film.
In the summer sun of Paris, David, a handyman, is thrilled to meet the beautiful Lena. They were enjoying happy days together, but a sudden tragedy shattered their happiness. They were victims of the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, and David's beloved sister died, plunging him into deep sorrow.
Overwhelmed by loneliness and grief, he decided to take care of his niece, Amanda. He tried to act like a parent to her, but the immense responsibility weighed heavily on young David, and he couldn't hide his bewilderment. Amanda, too, was struggling with the loss of her mother.
This film, presented in a cinematic format, makes you feel as if you're experiencing firsthand how people confront, recover from, and return to their lives after a real-life tragedy. It leaves you with a warm, sad, and exquisite feeling inside you after watching it. I think those who have experienced many things in their lives will likely feel more deeply moved by it. It's a truly wonderful film.
