"My dream for the future" that I wrote in my elementary school yearbook.
What did you write about your dream for the future in your elementary school graduation essay?
I wrote down my dream in quite specific detail: I want to become a radio DJ. I want to live in an apartment in the Minato Mirai area and spend my days listening to my favorite music.
I was in the upper grades of elementary school around the time when the term "junior high school entrance exam" was coined and many children started taking trains after school to attend cram schools. I would say it's no exaggeration to say that I was able to endure it all thanks to the radio.
Having spent my entire life in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, I'm a huge fan of FM79.5 NACK5. Even now, I still feel nostalgic when I listen to the NACK5 jingle that plays during the time signal on YouTube.
This was around the time the internet was becoming widespread. Back then, all we could do was imagine what the radio personality looked like based on their voice.
I remember opening my home computer and, rather than thinking of it as a search engine, I would go through the menus from the Yahoo Japan homepage to Entertainment > Radio > Kanto, and as I did so, I was able to do things I couldn't do before. I felt a sense of excitement, like I had entered a new era, and I remember it as a testament to the new functionality.
Youth and Australian Radio
Then, I studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia for high school, and there too, radio was a great source of support. Combined with my love for Western music since middle school, a medium where I could listen to popular songs for free was the coolest gadget for me.
In the early 2000s, Sony Ericsson released a small, flip phone that had an FM radio function, and even though it was a bit expensive, I chose to own it.
Streaming is now the norm, but the FM stations I listened to back then are still going strong.
