What did you write as your future dream in your elementary school graduation album?
For me, it was to become a radio DJ. I wanted to live in an apartment in the Minato Mirai area and spend every day listening to my favorite music. I wrote my dream with such specific detail.
It's not an exaggeration to say that radio sustained me during my upper elementary school years, which was shortly after the term "junior high school entrance exams" emerged and many children began taking trains to cram schools after school.
Having spent all my time in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, I was a huge fan of FM79.5 NACK5. Even now, I get nostalgic listening to the Nack 5 jingle that plays during the time signal on YouTube.
This was around the time when the internet was just starting to become widespread. In those days, all you could do was imagine what the radio personalities looked like from their voices.
I remember opening my home computer and feeling exhilarated, like I had entered a new era. Back then, the concept of "searching" wasn't as prevalent. Instead, you'd navigate through menus, like from the Yahoo Japan top page to Entertainment > Radio > Kanto. As I followed the menu, I could do things I'd never been able to do before. I remember it as if it were yesterday.
Youth and Australian Radio
After that, I studied abroad in Melbourne, Australia, for high school, and again, radio was my support. Combined with my love for Western music since junior high, a medium where I could listen to trending songs for free was the coolest gadget for me.
In the early 2000s, the small flip phones from Sony Ericsson had an FM radio function, and I chose one of those, even if it was a bit more expensive.
While streaming is now dominant, the FM stations I listened to back then are still active.
