Can you camp without a sleeping bag?
In early spring and autumn, it would be difficult without a sleeping bag, but in summer, it can be too hot to sleep in one.
For those new to camping in spring or autumn, bringing a futon is also an option.
This method makes it easier to adapt to temperature changes and is reassuring as it's similar to sleeping at home.
Also, in summer, if you wrap yourself in a sleeping bag, you might wake up due to the heat, so it's a good idea to spread out the sleeping bag and use it like a towel blanket.
Recommended Sleeping Bags
Montbell Down Hugger 800 #3
Montbell's flagship 3-season model.
Its unique stretch fabric minimizes the space between your body and the sleeping bag, yet it's so roomy you can sit cross-legged inside it without feeling cramped.
Incidentally, the smaller the # number, the lower the temperature it can be used in.
Isuka Alpha Light 700X
This is a more affordable product within the Isuka range.
Yet, it has solid basic performance and can be used in 3000m peaks from spring to autumn.
You might think it's a bit overkill, but since the insulation is synthetic, it's fine if it gets a little wet, so it's safe for children to use.
Nanga UDD BAG 450DX
The feathers themselves are water-repellent, overcoming the weakness of being vulnerable to moisture.
While it is on the pricier side, it is a product that delivers comfort commensurate with its cost.
How to Store a Sleeping Bag
For synthetic sleeping bags, fold them to the width of the stuff sack and pack them in from the bottom.
In contrast, down sleeping bags should not be folded, as this can tear the insulation; instead, just stuff them into the stuff sack.
For home storage, remove it from the stuff sack and store it in a well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
I keep mine in a 100-yen store laundry net to prevent dust from accumulating.
What to wear inside a sleeping bag?
Pajamas are the most comfortable thing to wear when getting into a sleeping bag.
Even without that, on camping nights when it's hard to sleep, loose-fitting clothes are best, and pajamas can make you feel as if you're at home.
However, since it's often not practical to bring pajamas to camp, a cotton sweatshirt is convenient.
Cotton is also resistant to bonfire sparks, making it ideal for camping life.
A sleeping pad is essential
When sleeping, if you try to lie directly on your sleeping bag inside the tent, you'll feel the unevenness and coldness of the ground, making it difficult to sleep.
Therefore, it is necessary to lay down an air mattress or similar.
