What kind of editing software is Filmora?

While Filmora may not be the most well-known software, it's feature-rich and easy to use.

Most people won't find themselves unable to do what they want with Filmora's editing software.

What I found inconvenient was the lack of an automatic transcription feature for subtitles, but this can be resolved by using a free software called "Vrew."

I myself have a YouTube channel that has been monetized (over 1,000 subscribers, over 4,000 hours of watch time annually), and free software was sufficient for subtitles.

I believe the automatic subtitle feature is only available in Adobe Premiere Pro since February 2021, but given Adobe Premiere Pro's high price (annual plan 28,776 yen (tax included)), this is probably unavoidable.

Filmora Pricing

For beginners in video editing, the 1-year plan for Filmora is recommended.

However, if you are sure you will use it for a long time, a perpetual license will be more cost-effective.

"Filmstock" is a service that provides a large amount of video materials such as BGM.

It's not absolutely essential, but it can be very convenient to have.

You can still edit without Filmstock, so it's not essential.
If you think you'll use it for more than a year, choose the perpetual license;
otherwise, go for the one-year plan!

The lower price compared to other companies is a welcome point for beginners.

If you look at the fine print, the 1-year plan and perpetual license include "NewBlue FX," "Boris FX," and "AI Portrait."

"NewBlue FX" includes excellent effect features, which can sometimes be an extra charge with other editing software.

Personally, I was pleased that these were included. In addition, the AI Portrait feature is interesting if you also edit photos.

Filmora System Requirements

Filmora software requires a minimum level of performance.

While it may still run if these specifications are not met, they serve as a benchmark for performance.

It's best to confirm operability by trying out the free trial version.

Filmora has the following features located in its menu bar:

The most important ones are "Media," "Audio," and "Titles," and if you want to refine your editing, it's also useful to learn "Effects" and "Transitions."

Auto Montage

Auto Montage is a feature that automatically creates a video by specifying BGM and importing video materials.

It's convenient when you want to create a simple video to your favorite BGM.

This feature is convenient for those who already have a specific BGM in mind.
If you're not particular about the BGM, Instant Mode might be easier to use.

When you select Auto Montage mode, a screen for selecting BGM and materials will appear.

After specifying the materials, click the "Analyze" button to generate the video.

Fine details can also be changed using the detailed settings such as blur and RGB on the bottom left of the screen.

Instant Mode

Instant Mode is a convenient feature that allows anyone to easily create a video automatically by simply specifying video clips.

When Instant Mode is selected, a template selection screen appears.

You can choose based on a rough image, so even beginners unfamiliar with video editing can use it intuitively.

This time, I chose "Travel Photo Vlog."

After selecting a template, the video import screen appears. Specify the editing material by dragging and dropping.

After a few minutes of waiting, the video will be created.

Speed Ramp

This speed ramp feature allows you to freely change the video playback speed.
It's very important because it greatly increases editing freedom.
Moreover, while it's often difficult to set up in other editing software, Filmora allows for intuitive selection.

Instant Mode is a convenient feature that allows anyone to easily create a video automatically by simply specifying video clips.

This feature is especially worth incorporating if you want to create cinematic and stylish videos.

For example, if the material was used as is, it would be a monotonous video.

You'll notice a big difference when you apply varying speeds with a speed ramp.

From the Tools > Speed tab, you can choose a template or freely customize it.

Most people will be able to enjoy the speed ramp templates sufficiently, but advanced users can also fine-tune settings to match their material with customization.

I tried editing a video using Filmora 11

Here is the finished video:

The editing screen is as follows. The seven thumbnails in the upper left are videos added as source material.

The upper right is the preview screen of the completed video. The bottom half of the screen shows the edits.

Adding Music

Double-click your desired song from the "Audio" menu to add it to the video.

The added song appears at the very bottom of the editing screen. I've cut the song to match the length of the video.

You can cut it by selecting "Edit" from the menu or right-clicking on the song and choosing "Cut."

Adding a Title

I've displayed text at the beginning.

To do this, select your desired title from the "Titles" menu and add it to the video.

This time, I added "Summer Set Sunshine Title 2," and then dragged and dropped to move the title's position and changed the font.

Adding Effects

In the video I tried this time, I added a "Cinema 219" effect to give it a cinematic feel.

There are also various other editing effects, such as adding mosaics to obscured faces.

Speed Ramps and Keyframes

Filmora 11 allows for speed ramp editing, so I've added speed ramp changes to the beginning and end of the video.

It's a bit forced, but I also added an animation that moves from left to right by adding keyframes.

You can create animations freely, allowing for personalized edits.

Adding Transitions

I added a "transition" animation to the part where one video switches to another.

A page-turning editing effect has been added. Filmora offers 500 different transitions, so there's almost nothing you won't be able to achieve.

From my own experience, even an amateur can earn tens of thousands of yen a month on YouTube if they stick with video editing.
