When booking a campsite, the first thing to consider is "how many people will be going." If it's just you or your family, a designated site is fine. However, if you're going with a group of friends or multiple families, you absolutely must choose a free site.
This is because there are broadly two types of campsites. One is a "designated site," where the campsite specifies your spot. The other is a "free site," where you can use a vast area as you please. If you want a group to use the same spot, a free site is definitely the way to go.
Next, let's talk about campsite locations. I believe it's important to consider what kind of view you want to enjoy. Broadly, there are four types: elevated, lakeside, grassland, and forest.
My favorite is an elevated campsite. Drinking whisky while looking at the city lights at night is the best. Lakeside campsites are also popular. You can relax while gazing at the lake. Grassland campsites offer the appeal of vast open space, but be aware that they can often be windy. This is because strong winds can blow away tents or spread bonfires. Setting up your tent requires particular care. For solo campers or beginners, forest campsites are recommended. Surrounded by trees, you can spend your time peacefully.
In summer, campsites by the sea or river are also good, but you need to be careful about water conditions, such as tides. For beginners, forest, elevated, or lakeside campsites are relatively safer.
By the way, I'm currently interested in "Tenku no Camp-jo" (Sky Campsite) in Chichibu. I saw it on social media and hope to visit someday.
