When booking a campsite, the first thing to consider is "how many people are going." If you're going alone or with family, a designated site is fine. However, if you're going with a group of friends or multiple families, you should definitely choose a free site.
This is because there are two main types of campsites. One is a "designated site" where the campsite staff assigns you a location. The other is a "free site" where you can freely use a vast area. If you want to use the same place as a group, a free site is definitely the way to go.
Next, let's talk about the campsite's location. I think it's important to consider what kind of view you want to enjoy. Broadly speaking, there are four types: hilltop, lakeside, grassland, and forest.
My favorite type of campsite is one on a hill. Drinking whiskey while watching the city lights at night is the best. Lakeside campsites are also popular. You can relax while gazing at the lake. Grassland campsites are appealing because you can use the vast space freely, but you need to be careful because they are often windy. This is because strong winds can blow tents away or cause campfires to spread. You need to be especially careful when setting up your tent. For solo campers and beginners, I recommend campsites in the woods. You can relax surrounded by trees.
In the summer, campsites along the sea or rivers are nice, but you need to be careful about water conditions such as the tides. For beginners, campsites in wooded areas, on hills, or by lakes are generally safer.
