- Thad Jones: Born into a musical family, he was a multi-instrumentalist on trumpet and cornet who began his professional career at 16. After experience with the Count Basie Orchestra, he met Mel Lewis and formed an innovative big band.
- Mel Lewis: A veteran drummer who played in big bands since the age of 15. After touring the Soviet Union with the Benny Goodman Orchestra, he met Jones in New York and together they carved out a new chapter in jazz history.
Their music, a fusion of Lewis's loose yet precise drumming and Jones's original arrangements, is hailed as the most influential big band since the Swing Era.

Even after Jones moved to Denmark in 1978, the band continued, changing its name to the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and then the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and still performs every Monday at the prestigious jazz club "Village Vanguard" in New York.
