This time, we're featuring "The Style Council," a band formed in the UK in 1982.
Since they unfortunately disbanded in 1990, I think they're a band that's not very well-known in Japan unless you're from that generation.
I first encountered this band in the 2000s when I was studying abroad in Melbourne, Australia, and was staying with a single woman in her 40s as part of a homestay program.
Looking back, I strongly feel that I was staying in a rather unusual place. Normally, you would be allowed to stay with a family that had a local student attending the same school.
She was someone who really enjoyed her single life and worked as a chef. So she cooked delicious meals for me every night, and I learned all about proper table manners there.
Every night before dinner, I would be told to "choose some music for the night" from the CD rack that stretched from the floor to the ceiling in the living room, and I, then 17 years old, would listen to it while I ate my meal.
I especially remember being thrilled every time I heard the cool intro to "Shut To The Top" from The Style Council's album.
Now, 15 years later, I'd like to introduce this band to you, recalling the feelings I had back then.
