Today's playlist. For the 8th time, it's a jazz record called "Dynamic Directional Dixie" that I bought at Flash Disc Ranch, a record store I frequent in Shimokitazawa.
This is a record store I've been going to since shortly after I started living in Setagaya, and it's popular for its awesome point card system: if you collect 50 stamps, you get half off any record under 15,000 yen, as long as the store is open.
Shimokitazawa, a place where I always feel like getting off the Odakyu Line unexpectedly on my way home.
Whenever I get off at Shimokita, I always stop by here and buy a few records before heading home.
From those, today I chose a record of good old American jazz, "Dick Cathcart."
Dick Cathcart (Charles Richard Cathcart; November 6, 1924 – November 8, 1993) was an American Dixieland trumpeter, best known as a member of The Lawrence Welk Show from 1962 to 1968.
Cathcart was born in Michigan City, United States. He was a trumpeter in the U.S. Army Air Force Band and a member of big bands led by Bob Crosby, Ben Pollack, and Ray Noble.
The genre of jazz played by artists like Dick Cathcart is called Dixieland Jazz.
Dixieland jazz, also known as traditional jazz, hot jazz, or simply Dixieland, is a style of jazz music that developed in New Orleans in the early 20th century.
It is characterized by one instrument (usually the trumpet) playing the melody or a recognizable variation or embellishment of it, while the other "front-line" instruments improvise around that melody. In any case, their refined sense is truly admirable.
