This is a record store I've been going to ever since I first moved to Setagaya. It's popular because of its amazing point card system, which is valid as long as the store is open. Once you collect 50 stamps, you can buy any number of records under 15,000 yen for half price.
Firefall, the maverick of American rock: Glory, setbacks, and an indomitable spirit
Firefall burst onto the American rock scene like a comet in the 1970s. Two musical geniuses, Rick Roberts of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Jock Bartley of Zephyr, formed the band in 1974 amidst the free-spirited atmosphere of Colorado. Their country rock, which combined urban sophistication with earthy warmth, quickly captured the hearts of many music fans.
Hit songs that swept across America
Their second single, "You Are the Woman," reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976. Its melancholic melody and beautiful harmonies continue to captivate many listeners to this day. Furthermore, they released numerous hit songs such as "Just Remember I Love You" and "Strange Way," coloring the music scene of the late 1970s. In live performances, Rick Roberts' warm and enveloping vocals and Jock Bartley's emotionally charged guitar playing captivated audiences, and their popularity spread throughout the United States.
The shadow lurking behind success
However, behind their dazzling success lay a variety of difficulties, including discord among the members and troubles with management. In a 2012 interview, Rick Roberts candidly spoke about the band's struggles, including the grueling touring life at the time, differences in musical direction among the members, and contract issues with the record company. As these problems piled up, Firefall gradually lost momentum.
The path to recovery
Firefall faced a difficult path, marked by repeated member changes and the termination of their record label contract. However, their passion for music never waned. In 1982, they relaunched with a new lineup centered around Jock Bartley, releasing the album "Break of Dawn" and aiming for a comeback in the music scene. They continued to be active afterward, and in 2020, they released "Comet," their first album in 20 years. Their more mature sound received high praise not only from long-time fans but also from a new audience.
The legend continues into the future.
In 2015, they were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, in recognition of their achievements. Having overcome various challenges, including member departures and illness, Firefall continues to evolve. Their music is loved across generations and will undoubtedly continue to captivate many fans for years to come.
